Hodgson sees Liverpool’s Torres improving with every game
Fernando Torres Liverpool World Cup Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson reckons the club can now reap the benefits of using Fernando Torres sparingly as he recovered from knee surgery. Torres returned to Merseyside this season carrying a groin injury suffered in Spain's World Cup triumph over Holland. But the 26 year old striker is approaching peak condition and the Reds boss is predicting big things, beginning against the Birmingham on Sunday. "It's a good sign," Hodgson told The Liverpool Echo. "He's a goalscorer, he's a quality player and is someone we were desperate to keep at the club because if you are going to have a good season, you are going to need players like him. "It's going to take him a bit more time to get over the injury he had before the World Cup and the one he sustained in the final but he is working very, very hard and he has a good relationship with the Sports Science department. I trust them to together to do what is right for him." Hodgson expressed his relief that Torres, who scored a brace for Spain in their Euro 2012 qualifier last Friday, was an unused substitute in the World champions' friendly defeat to Argentina. "They explained it wasn't possible for him to skip the trip. If he'd done that then a lot of other big name players, like Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas might have wanted to skip it as well," he added. "Through fairness they felt obliged to take everybody, but the fact he played no part in the game hopefully means he will come back in good shape and be able to work with us instead. "I spoke to the coach, Vicente del Bosque through Fernando Hierro and luckily they listened to my plea not to over play him."   Need your Liverpool news fix? Touts make killing on Northern Ireland v Italy qualifier
Online touts are selling tickets for Northern Ireland's Euro 2012 qualifier against Italy next month at more than eight times their face value, reports BBC Sport. Fans are being asked to play £350 for a ticket normally costing £40 by a Spanish-based website, the Belfast Telegraph reported on Thursday. Tickets for the 8 October match have yet to go on sale and are not believed to have even been printed yet. The Irish FA has promised to investigate the issue. "It came to light when a Northern Ireland supporter telephoned us to complain that tickets were available at these prices," said Belfast Telegraph group sports editor Jim Gracey. "Very quickly we discovered that tickets are available on a website based in Spain. "Obviously the people who run these websites have got an agreement in place with someone who is guaranteed a ticket for this match at Windsor Park. "And it's obviously more than one person because there are a number of tickets for sale at these prices. "Someone, somewhere has obtained tickets from the Irish FA, for them to sell on for extortionate prices." Gracey added that the IFA is "appalled and puzzled" by the development and has promised to investigate the issue.

Portsmouth ownership issue to be decided next Thursday
Portsmouth The Football League will be meeting next Thursday to determine whether Balram Chainrai can takeover Portsmouth, reports euFootball.BIZ. Andrew Andronikou, the Fratton Park club administrator, says that if this takeover is approved, it will be a "watershed" moment for the club which has been working its way out of administration. Andronikou said: "The board will sit to decide whether to approve Mr Chainrai's takeover and whether the club's golden share in the league should be transferred to his company or not. I hope they say yes. “They absolutely should do. But everything about this club has been like pushing a cart up a hill. But if it goes through it will be watershed. I can see blue sky ahead, the club will effectively be out of administration and out of the clutches of the Football League. It will then be down to the management and current board and playing staff." Andronikou spoke of March as a sort of deadline. "That's when the first payment of £3 million is due. If Mr Chainrai becomes the new owner he will have to pay the amount by then. Under the terms of the Company Voluntary Agreement, nine months after it was agreed, the current company that owns Portsmouth will be no more, the CVA ends, and Mr Chainrai's new company takes over under a sale-and-purchase-agreement, which states he must pay the balance of around £13 million over the next four years."
