Africa Can Make The 2010 Semis

Cameroon coach Otto Pfister is of the opinion that an African team can make it to the semi-final stage of the forthcoming 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

"Depending on form, Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire and ourselves (Cameroon) are probably the strongest African teams," the German born coach has repeated many times. "I do think that it's realistic to expect an African team to reach the semi-finals of the next (2010) World Cup. Home advantage will naturally play a role as the familiar surroundings, climate and general atmosphere will favor the top African teams."

The Indomitable Lions need just a point from their next two qualifying games to progress to the next round of the 2010 World Cup/Nations Cup qualifying campaign, and Pfister believes that should not be much of a problem for his team.

Netherlands Frustrated By Nigeria

Netherlands 0-0 Nigeria

Neither the European U-21 Champions nor the 'Dream Team IV' could muster a goal between them in Tianjin. A very physical game with no major offensive opportunities. When an African team can hold The Netherlands to a scoreless draw this speaks to the power of the Nigerians not noted for such defensive prowess.

Culture Foot Solidaire

In addition to his statement about 6+5 Blatter finally provided the footballing world a statement on the black market transfer of African players:

"The protection of minors is also another crucial issue. On 6 June, the Home of FIFA played host to a meeting between FIFA, the Confederation of African Football, FIFPro and 'Culture Foot Solidaire', a non-governmental organisation that is dedicated to the protection of young African players. World football's governing body fully supports the activities of 'Culture Foot Solidaire' to protect the rights of young African players, who are naturally attracted by the exciting prospects that they see in football but unfortunately sometimes betrayed by those who present themselves as their benefactors."

It's about time FIFA stood up about this. For years, the young African footballer has been targeted as nothing more than a natural resource worth strip mining. This is a topic that needs to be promoted at every level of the game - it's a tragedy that FIFA has allowed to be swept under the rug for years.
