Former Bayern Munich and New York Cosmos legend Franz Beckenbauer has labelled the new Red Bull Arena as a 'fantastic' soccer stadium. The German legend was present at the unveiling of the Harrison, New Jersey venue on Sunday watch the Red Bulls defeat Brazilian club Santos and was delighted with how the stadium feels and looks.
It’s a fantastic soccer stadium,” Beckenbauer said. “Also the capacity, I think it’s nearly 30,000, I think it’s perfect… It’s a fantastic arena, it’s a fantastic home for Red Bull.”
Beckenbauer was a part of the old New York Cosmos in the mid-70s and commented on just how much the sport had developed in the USA since.
“It was fantastic seeing what’s going on,” Beckenbauer added. “Pele was the first in ’75, he came, and the country reacting slowly, then more and more teams and players are coming up. (In) 1977, there was almost no one in the country (who) played the game. Now if you see the development of soccer in the country, more than 20 million Americans playing the game. It’s fantastic.”

Too bad they couldn't have flown in Pele and a few of the other Cosmos originals to really give this a bang in the media, especially with it being Santos and all on the other side of the pitch. Seems like a no-brainer to me. |

Pele was probably too busy scoring in Brazil to get on the jet. Interesting that the Kaiser made the trip to New York. I can't seem to figure out whether he likes the anonymity in the States or being recognized everywhere he goes in the Fatherland, eh?My guess is the former - he doesn't seem to like the public eye that much, never really did. |

You know, it would have been extremely cool to have all those old Cosmos guys together to take a look at this new arena up close. Especially Pele with his joint connection to the Cosmos and to Santos with a very large Brazilian section of supporters in the stands.Pele is perhaps the one sports figure on the planet besides Ali who could have broken the NCAA strangehold on the media this past weekend. |

How come Robinho didn't play? Did he even make the trip? Robinho? He's probably too busy with a coke and hooker binge someplace near the Brazilian coastline. |

That explains why I haven't seen Adriano in a while. They'll probably dry him out once the state championships are over, no? |

How come Robinho didn't play? Did he even make the trip? Robinho's a jackass. Plain and simple. How he sniffs the Brazilian lineup and Dinho doesn't is beyond me. |
